Before the Fair:
Preview Days & Wish lists

Before the fair opens, every Scroggs student will visit the library with their class to preview the book cases and make a personal wish list.

Preview Days

Students will preview the books that will be available during the book fair on Friday, November 6th, Monday, November 9th, or Tuesday, November 10th, depending on the teacher’s preferred day and time.

Volunteers Needed

We’re looking for parent and guardian volunteers to help students put together their wish lists during Preview Days. Time slots are based on when teachers schedule their class visits, so new openings may appear as teachers sign up.

Three Ways to Shop

  1. Students and families together: Shop together any time during fair hours, including Saturday morning.

  2. Students on their own: Students may shop alone during the school day with their teacher’s permission. To set this up, email your child’s homeroom teacher and copy Ms. Barringer at rbarringer@chccs.k12.nc.us. Please send enough money to cover North Carolina’s 7.5% sales tax.

  3. Adults shopping without kids: Shop for holiday gifts on Thursday or Friday while students are in class, and check in at the front office if you arrive after 7:50 am. Can’t come during the school day? Shop the online fair and have books shipped home.

How to Pay

The fair accepts cash, credit cards, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the Scholastic eWallet.

With the Scholastic eWallet, students can shop on their own without carrying cash. Create an eWallet for each student and add funds with a credit card, or share the link with family and friends so they can contribute. The eWallet is ready at the register for quick checkout. Of note, Scholastic will will ask you to sign in or create a new account to set up an eWallet.

Scholarship Funds are Available

Each year, the book fair team sets aside scholarship funds so that every Scroggs student can shop the fair. Students who use scholarship funds choose the book they want most from their wish list. To request scholarship funding for your child, fill out this private form: Request Scholarship Funding

Four Ways to Help Others During the Fair

  1. Volunteer at the fair: The book fair team needs volunteers to help students find books, run the register, and keep the shelves stocked. Sign up for a shift that works for you.

  2. Donate to the scholarship fund: Your gift to Ms. Barringer’s eWallet scholarship fund helps more students choose a book of their own.

  3. Round up at the register: When you check out, you can donate or round up your change to support Books in Bloom, which gives every Scroggs student a free book before Spring Break. More info below.

  4. Donate to the Scroggs PTA: Your donation supports programs like preparing for the Book Fair and hosting Books in Bloom, as well as many other student-focused initiatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to check in when I come to shop?
It depends on when you arrive.

  • Thursday & Friday before 7:50 am: Enter through the front doors and go straight to the fair. No check-in needed.

  • Thursday & Friday after 7:50 am: If you’re staying in the building during school hours, get a visitor sticker or sign in at the front office kiosk.

  • Afternoons and Saturday: Use the marked side entrance. You’ll sign in at the PTA welcome table just inside the door.

How do wish lists work?
During Preview Days, each student makes a wish list.

  • Pre-K through 1st grade get help from volunteers, who photograph each child holding their top three books and attach the photo to the wish list.

  • Grades 2–5 write down up to five books, along with where each one is in the fair and its price.

Prices on wish lists are before tax, so add 7.5% when sending money.

Can my child pay with coins?
Yes! Coins are welcome.

Can I buy books for a student who isn’t my child?
To protect every student’s privacy and dignity, please buy books only for your own children. If you’d like to help other students shop, donate to the scholarship fund. Every student who needs help is supported confidentially through the scholarship program.

Is the scholarship request private?
Yes. Only Ms. Barringer sees the form responses. You can request help for more than one child on the same scholarship form, and your child will shop with Ms. Barringer and pick the top book from their wish list.

Can grandparents and out-of-town family shop?
Yes. Through the Scholastic Book Fair Online, family members can order books and have them shipped to their homes. Every purchase still supports Scroggs.

Where do my donations go?

  • Scholarship fund (eWallet) donations help individual students shop the fair.

  • Round-ups at the register and “Share the Fair” online gifts go to Books in Bloom, our spring giveaway that gives every student a free book.

Is the Book Fair the same as Scholastic Book Clubs?
No. Book Clubs are run by individual teachers and earn rewards for that classroom. The Book Fair supports the school library.
